‘Widen your Excel knowledge with VBA’ Workshop

The APU Actuarial Science Club (ASC) organized the "Widen Your Excel Knowledge with VBA Workshop (2024)" on March 26, 2024 from 2.00pm to 4.30pm. Led by the proficient instructor, Ms. Caryn, the workshop aimed to empower participants with advanced Excel VBA skills crucial for their professional endeavours and enhance their effectiveness in workplace.

The showcase of the application of Excel VBA was based on the knowledge learned in the Mathematics of Financial Derivative (MFD) and Financial Mathematics (FMTS) modules, which are learned in Year 2 Semester 1. Ms. Caryn started the session by listing out the items required in calculating the call and put prices of a binomial tree. She then introduced examples of scenarios by changing the values of each of these items. After the preparation work was done, Ms. Caryn started introducing the process of Excel VBA via the Macro function to automate the data generation. She explained how Excel VBA can reduce the workload tremendously by clicking a single button instead of calculating each of the scenarios one at a time.

Next, Ms. Caryn performed a sensitivity test based on the obtained data. As the example involved numerous scenarios, the Macro function was used to automate data generation. A button was also created to trigger the automated function.

Furthermore, an annuity example was used to demonstrate the GoalSeek function. Ms. Caryn showed how to manipulate both Macro and GoalSeek to automate finding the interest rate required to achieve an accumulated value of $1,000,000 with different terms and payments.

Building on the clear guidance, participants delved into hands-on practice, putting their newfound Excel VBA skills to the test. Ms. Caryn's attentive support and guidance fostered a conducive learning environment, ensuring that every student received personalized assistance.

In summary, the "Widen Your Excel Knowledge with VBA" Workshop proved invaluable for participants, allowing them to develop their proficiency in a skill essential for boosting their effectiveness in the workplace. Through insightful instruction and interactive practice, the workshop not only imparted technical expertise but also instilled confidence in participants to tackle complex challenges.

APU Actuarial Science Club has collaborated with the School of Mathematics, Actuarial and Quantitative Studies (SOMAQS) in conducting a talk titled “Takaful: More Than Just Islamic Insurance” in conjunction with Math Galactica week on 25 May 2023. We are honoured to invite Mr. Khairul Anuar Azman, currently the Product Strategy and Strategic Initiatives Manager at Takaful Malaysia, to share more about takaful to our students.

Mr Khairul began the talk by dispelling the stereotype that most people have on takaful, which is “islamic insurance”. He also emphasised that takaful is not just for muslims, everyone can participate in takaful. The talk also helped students in understanding how takaful really works and the role of a takaful operator in this risk-sharing approach model. Mr. Khairul also shared the primary concept in islamic finance, explaining why insurance is not compliant from a Shariah point of view. The talk ended with an overview of the takaful industry in Malaysia, including the structure of a Takaful company.

We hope that students will now have a better understanding of the key principles of takaful, and how it can offer a more equitable and socially responsible approach to insurance. Thank you for reading and hope you enjoy the event!

Navigating Uncertainty: The Art of Risk Management

APU Actuarial Science Club had conducted a risk management forum titled “Navigating Uncertainty: The Art of Risk Management” during the annual math week on 22 May 2023 in conjunction with School of Mathematics, Actuarial and Quantitative Studies (SOMAQS). It was our first time collaborating with SOMAQS and we are extremely honoured to invite two passionate panelists, Mr. Ng Khai Yan, an AVP, Risk Management from Tokio Marine Life Insurance Malaysia and Mr. Wang Zhao Loon, Assistant Manager of Enterprise Risk Management from MSIG Insurance Malaysia Sdn. Bhd to share more about risk and risk management to our students.

The risk management forum consisted of two sessions where the panelists shared about what is risk, different types of risk such as credit risk and underwriting risk, an overview of the basic principles of risk management and the common risk management practices in an organization such as risk identification, residual risk assessment and monitoring in the first session. They also provided students with some examples and scenarios such as the case of misjudging COVID-19 risks in Taiwan, the 2008 global financial crisis and the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank due to the liquidity crisis and misjudging of liquidity risk.

The forum is then continued with detailed discussion on risk in the panelists’ expertise on Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and Cybersecurity Risk where they had shared about the common ERM tools such as key risk indicator, stress testing and risk control self assessment, successful example of risk management practices in their organizations, and also their two cents on the current trends of risks such as pandemic and climate risk. Game of Wealth

APU Actuarial Science Club had conducted another financial event in collaboration with WIMAG Capital Management PLT for 2023, titled “Game of Wealth” on 29th April 2023. Thanks to the overwhelming response from the participants last time back in 2021, we are honoured to invite WIMAG Capital Management PLT once again to co-host the event with us after two years.

The event started off with an introduction by Mr. Kong Shiun Yung, on a brief explanation why is financial planning important to us and how to play the CASHFLOW 101 board game which is a tool that can educate the players about financial literacy and planning. Every player got to pick their profession card before the game started. In order to win, they had to get out of the Rat Race and buy their dream in Fast Track or increase their cash flow by $50,000 to win the game. After 2 hours of the game session, we finally have 3 players who successfully got out of the rat race and won the cash prizes. These winners are Lok Jia Hui,  Ong Wei Kiat and Smaran Datta a/l Ganesan. They shared what they have learnt through the game and how they won the game.

The event was followed by a financial talk by Darren Liew, founder and Chief Advisor of WIMAG Consulting Group Sdn Bhd, where Mr. Liew started with some important takeaways after playing the CASHFLOW 101 board game. Participants can understand that having financial literacy is extremely crucial so that one knows how to distribute income or having emergency funds beforehand so that one does not end up having monetary issues in near future. However, there are still many limitations to take note when compared to playing the game since there are many things to take into consideration in reality, for example there are many different risk and procedures to think through on different assets such as real estates and stocks, hence would need to be extra cautious when purchasing any assets in order to generate one’s passive income.

The event was conducted successfully as we received multiple positive feedback from our participants on both the game session and financial talk. We intend to keep conducting such informative and insightful events for our participants in the future. Keep in touch with our future initiatives and thank you for reading!

discussed valuation in the General Insurance industry titled “General Insurance: An Insight to
Valuation”. It is an honor for us to have Mr. Sirius Lim Chong Sheng as our guest. Mr. Lim
Chong Sheng is currently the Head of Actuary at Tune Insurance Malaysia Berhad. He has
provided insurance strategy, capabilities and product/service offerings to Xiaomi Group.

The session started with a request from Mr. Lim to let the participants open their camera, for the
purpose of creating a more interactive session between the speaker and the audience. Mr. Lim
provided valuable insights of valuation in General Insurance such as the types of insurance
liabilities - Unexpired Risk (URR), Incurred but Not Yet Reported (IBNYR), and Incurred but
Not Enough Reported (IBNER). He also explained other terms such as premium liability and
claims liability and how they affect the profit of General Insurance companies.

In addition, Mr. Lim created a technical experience for the participants to make estimations on
the sum of IBNR using Google Sheets. The purpose of this activity was to see the differences of
estimations among the participants by analyzing the mean, median etc.

The session was ended by receiving words of encouragement from Mr. Lim, which can be
concluded that, “No matter how challenging the journey is to become a qualified actuary, do not
forget on why we have chosen a path to become an actuary.”

The event was conducted successfully as we received multiple positive feedback from our
participants. We intend to keep conducting such informative and insightful sessions for our
participants in the future. Keep in touch with our future initiatives and thank you for reading!

Game Of Wealth

Last month, APU ASC successfully organized the Game Of Wealth in collaboration with Wimag Capital Management LLP. This was the first time that our club organized such an event and it was indeed an enriching experience for both our club members and committee members as well.

The Game of Wealth is inspired from the Cashflow 101 board game by the Rich Dad brand owned by Robert Kiyosaki, with the main intention to raise awareness about financial freedom amongst students. Through this event, we aimed at increasing awareness on the importance of financial literacy and improving cash flow literacy. Our participants were required to take on a role of a regular employee of different professions and from there on, try to escape the ‘rat race’ and proceed onto the ‘fast track’ by investing in different opportunities. In the fast track, one either needs to be the first person to purchase their dream or to accumulate $50,000 in monthly cash flow from businesses purchased to win the game. Along the way, participants were required to keep track of their income, expenses, assets and liabilities. Our participants were deeply engaged during the whole session, while some managed to get into the fast track using wise techniques.

The game session was followed by a highly beneficial and informative financial talk, which all participants thoroughly enjoyed. Our speaker gave some invaluable tips to improve our financial management. We would like to thank Wimag Capital Management LLP and all our members for their active participation! We look forward to hosting many such fruitful sessions in the future!

Actuarial Pricing & Valuation

After concluding our first webinar in January which was “How to Multiply Your Time”, our club has held the second webinar on 8th February titled “Actuarial Pricing & Valuation”.

We are extremely thankful for our speaker, Mr Kelvin Hii for volunteering his precious time out to brief our students about the two key working areas in the traditional actuarial field which are ‘Actuarial Pricing’ and ‘Actuarial Valuation’. Mr. Kelvin Hii is the Vice President of Actuarial at MSIG Insurance Bhd. He is also the current President-Elect of Actuarial Society of Malaysia (ASM).

So, the BIG questions for the webinar include:

  1. What are the job scopes for actuarial pricing and valuation (and their differences)?

  2. What are the roles that we might be interested in the future and how should we prepare for them?

Below is the brief summary of our webinar.

Pricing is quite generic between life insurance and general insurance. For general insurance actuaries, they commonly use the words “ratemaking”, “rating”, “premium rating”, and “insurance rating” referring to the pricing exercise itself.

Valuation tends to be more towards life insurance. On the other hand, general insurance actuaries will call it as “reserving” which bring out the same meaning, that is, perform valuation to determine how much of reserves to set aside.

Actuarial Pricing and Actuarial Valuation are traditional actuarial work hence the actuarial graduates must become an actuary to get into these areas.

Through this webinar, Mr.Kelvin Hii introduced the concepts of both actuarial pricing and actuarial valuation with some real life examples, for example, year-end closing. He made clear distinctions between these two areas of the actuarial field. He has also presented to us on the statutory role of appointed actuary (valuation actuary) including the requirements and duties of appointed actuary. In addition, we had an enriching Q and A session where our participants actively involved in asking reasonable questions.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in our webinar. We got a rating of 4.90 which is the highest record among our past events, as well as concluded with the highest attendance rate so far. To benefit from more insightful sessions, make sure to stay tuned to our upcoming events! Thank you for reading!

How To Multiply Your Time

The APU Actuarial science club is proud to announce the success of its first event for the year 2021. We kickstarted the year with a webinar titled “How to Multiply Your Time” which took place virtually on 8th January 2021.

We are extremely thankful for our young, inspiring and motivational speaker, Mr Jan Wong for volunteering his precious time out to share his personal experiences and valuable tips on effective time management.  Mr Jan Wong is an entrepreneur, youth advocate and the founder of OpenMinds. He is equally a TEDx speaker and part of APU Alumnus. We would also like to thank everyone who participated in the webinar. For those who have missed it, you can still benefit from his precious sharing which has been summarised below!

So, the BIG question for the webinar was; How come some people manage to do so much in a day while others do so little during the same lapse of time? We all have 24 hours in a day. Yet, what is preventing us from making the most of that time? Contrary to popular beliefs, it is not money or time management. It’s about having a goal and taking action. It is crucial to have a clear goal in your mind of the things that you want to achieve. There is the dire need to be exceptionally unique in this highly competitive world to taste success. However, it is to be remembered that behind the successes, there are many failures and sacrifices. So, if you want to have a better future and achieve your goal, you NEED to gain control over your time. He firmly quoted, ‘Dreams are empty without actions’. There is no better time than now to get started. So the trick is to get the ass to do it and conquer your time!

Here are 9 effective tips by Mr Jan Wong to take control over your time:

1.Have a Specific and Non-negotiable goal

2.List down the actions you need to take

3.Be Brutal with your schedule; Plan ahead

4.Prioritize and NEVER procrastinate; Learn to say “NO!”

5.Stop Multitasking

6.Stop draining time

7.Start your day early and eat the frog first

8.Know your zone

9.Remember to rest

He also shared his favorite quote in an eloquent manner, “Your mindset determines the size of the lifegames you play”.

Indubitably, the charisma and enthusiasm of our speaker, Jan kept us awestruck since the beginning of the session and retained most of the audience till the end of the session. We got a satisfactory rating of 4.72. Finally, we ended the webinar with the Q & A session.  That was all for this event. You may have a quick glance of the pictures of the event below. To benefit from similar useful content, make sure to stay tuned to our upcoming events! Thank you for reading!
